Silicon and osteoporosis

What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis - popularly called bone loss - is a gradual process. It mainly affects post-menopausal women and people taking certain medications (e.g. cortisone), and can cause increased bone loss or a disorder of the bone microarchitecture. However, (younger) men can also develop osteoporosis. If left untreated, the bones become increasingly fragile and more prone to fractures.

Various studies suggest that in Germany a total of 7.8 million men and women aged 50 years and older are affected by osteoporosis, with women making up approximately 83% of those with the condition.

Our nutritional supplement Osvalin, a solution of high-concentration and bioavailable silicon (dioxide), can have a positive impact on bone and cartilage metabolism. Taking Osvalin is also advantageous as a preventive measure because it supplements your silicon and magnesium intake.

What silicon does for osteoporosis.

Silicon is an important mineral for the human body, and it supports the formation of connective tissue, cartilage, and bone. Silicon promotes the absorption of calcium into the bone structure and helps build a stable skeleton. Calcium is vital for healthy bones.

In the normal aging process of bones, the silicon concentration decreases and, at the same time, deposits of calcium and phosphorus form because not all of the calcium is being used to build bone substance. The bones become more porous and prone to fractures as bone density decreases (bone loss) and the bones become more unstable. To prevent bone degradation, it is necessary to promote bone formation and calcium use. Hydrolyzed silicon dioxide (Osvalin®) helps to replenish the silicon reserves and keep the bones healthy.

An adequate intake of silicon can help slow bone loss and improve bone strength. Studies have shown that increased silicon intake is associated with higher bone density and a lower risk of osteoporosis.

In addition, silicon may also have anti-inflammatory properties that may be beneficial in the treatment of osteoporosis. Inflammation plays a role in the bone resorption and bone loss that occurs in osteoporosis.

However, it is important to note that silicon alone is not enough to prevent or treat osteoporosis. A balanced diet rich in calcium, vitamin D and other nutrients, and regular physical activity are also important factors for bone health. It is recommended to always consult a doctor or nutritionist before taking supplements or changing dietary habits.
